No community has ever asked for this!

What exactly was asked for? (so glad you asked)

The incredible Community

“Could you please design a child-friendly course that is fun and will practically prepare children to help save lives (including their own) and respond in a disaster?”

'Yes we can!’ said the Childhood Rescue team.

They got busy meeting with the school district and emergency department. Together they worked up a relevant child-friendly educational course called the DRR course - 'Disaster Risk Reduction Management'.

The final day of the training was an amazing real-life simulation, complete with fire hats, uniforms and fire trucks!

Natural disasters happen a lot in this area, the effects of climate and the dangers of makeshift IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) living arrangements mean children know disasters all too well.

Now, these 50 young teenagers are ready to assist.

This is not a drill!

A few thoughts from our brave new firefighters!

Aira, 14yrs old

"I've experienced a disaster before. We were very scared. It is important to learn these disaster reduction skills. If we don't, how will we save our lives?"

Ashary, 15yrs old

"I was a bit nervous at first, but when I put the fire gear on, I got excited. It felt satisfying to put out the fire. My dream is to become a fire fighter."

Our Childhood Rescue Leader, Adonis became chief 'helmet adjuster' ensuring the kids were safe to take on the fire drill.

You can only imagine how much the kids loved/feared this part of the drill. But, it's essential to the training and the kids rose to the challenge!

One of the most amazing things about Childhood Rescue programming is our relationship and reliance on the local community.

We develop our programmes to meet their specific needs regarding children. And when things change, we can too, which means the impact of your gift is super relevant.

A lot of the time, humanitarian aid is granted in quite rigid ways. Whilst there is no doubt it's super appreciated and impactful, there are oftentimes it can't stretch or extend to things the community really see as a priority, like this.

There wasn't a child-friendly DRR course. The community saw a need and we saw it too.

Working in such an organic way with the community ensures your gift helps children survive and recover in the most relevant ways possible.

That's the only kind of fire we don't want to put out :)

Mindanao, Philippines

Marawi and Cotabato City are located on the island of Mindanao in the south of the Philippines. The predominantly Muslim population lives in the crossfire of conflict between rival militant and terrorist groups.

In 2017, a siege began and everyone's life changed in an instant.

For 5 months, militant and government forces fought, destroying thousands of homes, businesses and infrastructure. Up to 360,000 people were forced to flee to neighbouring regions. Four years on, many families still can not return home and live in Internally Displaced Population (IDP) settlements.

A lack of security, health, food and education mean children are highly vulnerable to recruitment offers by militant groups. Childhood Rescue's will help children build their futures through education, health and peace building.

  • Terrorist and militant behaviour undermine social stability and children's futures

  • Terrorist attacks and kidnappings are common in the region

  • Natural disasters cause significant difficulties for families in the region
