Well well, good things are happening in Luuq, Somalia.

Our resident impact comms woman, Hodan visited a recent community distribution day, where many of the activities from the past few months were celebrated but also advanced.

Here's a quick at what your gift has been providing in Somalia recently:

  • Agriculture classes
  • Savings groups
  • Land restoration
  • Animal and livestock handling training
  • Seed and tool distributions

The program that the WV team designed with and for these local communities is outstanding!

Holistic, inclusive and sustainable.

Whilst at times it may seem odd to do lots of helpful things aimed at adults, the research is clear... when communities are unified, can grow and produce food, are equipped to recover from shocks and also have access to sustainable livelihoods, children grow and thrive.

This community has experienced many shocks of late, but determined, they have come together, making the most out of the opportunities offered to them through your gifts. This is an inspiring story to watch and be apart of.

"My name is Said Salah Ahmed, from Bulomusley village. I am the chief of the village.

Today, World Vision provided us with seven different types of seeds, including onion, watermelon, also we get parsley, pepper, and tomato.

During previous floods, we faced challenges in our farms, water flowed through areas that were not previously prone to flooding.

The loss of vegetation and homes being swept away, these impacts caused significant hardship.

World Vision helped us rebuild the damaged irrigation canals and they've also provided us with agricultural training and seeds."

Chief Ahmed with some of the seeds received by the community in the distribution. These seeds will assist many farmers who lost all crops in the latest floods.

"My name is Ali, from Jaziira vil-lage, Luuq District.

World Vision provided us with training on animal health and livestock care. After completing the first training the second focused on linking with private veterinary facilities, enabling direct collaboration between us.

Today, we receive complete kit of equipment to be used for hands-on treatment and care of livestock. One of the challenges faced by pastoralists is lack of knowledge about livestock diseases,

When an animal falls ill, they often do not contact help immediately.

To eliminate recurring diseases and prevent outbreaks we have planned to provide treatment in our areas as well as in all locations we are able to reach.

The Somali community, we heavily rely on live-stock products when droughts occur, children and elderly are the most effected due to lack of milk and meat therefore, we kindly request that you increase your support to us as much as possible."

25 members of the Herokowad Savings Group receive their business & savings kit. "This is the first time for me, being a part of savings group. We hope to bring more positive impact. We are a collaborative community," said new member, Gini.

The effect of an unpredictable climate resulting in floods, drought and the loss of livelihoods, animals and crops has deeply affected these communities.

This community day did a lot of good, take a final look...

  • 200 farmers from 5 villages

  • 125 savings group members receive kits to manage and start small businesses

  • 15 trained animal health workers receive kits to treat and care for animals in their villages

Your gift is providing holistic impact, assisting the whole of the community which means at the end of the day, helping children survive, recover and build a future.

Climate

Climate change - arguably the greatest challenge facing our modern world.

We clearly see the effects of climate in the news & on our social media feeds. Images of natural disasters and unheard of weather phenomenons such as uncontrollable fires, snap freezes, rising sea levels, flooding and drought demonstrate the changes in our natural world and the heart-breaking effects on people's lives.

Climate affects us all, but the most vulnerable are affected in ways we just don't associate with the climate change.

Have you ever thought of climate change resulting in the drastic increase of child marriages or child labour? It can seem disconnected, but we constantly see the effects of climate change and how it severely increases the underlying issues of poverty.

Violence, neglect, exploitation and displacement rob children of their childhood and their future. Climate and issues of poverty are all connected, with food insecurity being one of the greatest threats to children living in the communities we serve.

Empowering people to survive disaster and build sustainable futures is a significant way we're working to fight the effects of climate change in the world's most complex and dangerous places.
