> "It may seem like a little but this helps us a lot."

605 Honduran families in 11 communities receive an unexpected bag full of essential food items.

Rice. A variety of beans. Oil. Salt. Flour. Canned foods.

It may not seem like it would help much at all, but countless women said the same thing, "This really helps and will make a big difference. Thank you!"

Press play and see for yourself :)

This specific food distribution wasn't planned and your gift did not purchase this food, but it did help make it a possibility. It went something like this...

An unexpected phone call.

Some fast thinking WV staff.

A few trucks.

Some bags.

A community check in.

Many hands to sort & pack.

An adjusted schedule.

Committed staff.

And then, joyful part...

Delivering 605 bags of essential food items to 11 communities.

So, if we didn't buy all of that the food and we didn't plan for this, who called and how'd it happen? Keep scrolling to find out

David delivers food bags in one of the communities he works with. Many of the women here are active members of other WV initiatives, such as learning and savings groups and their children may also participate in WV activities, such as a peace club. The community work is very connected and women especially are eager to do all they can to help to improve their children's futures.

In many places we work, relationships mean everything, they can be the difference between life and death. This is especially true in Honduras where gangs fight to control territories aka communities and streets.

The team have dedicated themselves to nurturing relationships in some of the most violent and 'no-go' places in Honduras because children who live there deserve to build a future.

Globally, humanitarian needs grow larger each year but budgets rarely do. Thankfully, in Honduras, local and national organisations and companies want to play a part in helping children but they do not know how — but we do :)

The combination of our trusted relationships and access with private resources and good will means opportunities like this unexpected food distribution can happen with ease.

This now happens because your gift has helped the WV team build strategic community partnerships. When a local company and organisation wants to play a part in helping children, they know they can call the team and together they'll make it happen.

Community partnerships come in all shapes and sizes. Many of them happen through a business gifting items or goods, such as bus hire, donuts for end of year party, food items from a supplier, mentoring from a university etc.

Community partnerships have bought about great additional opportunities for the children, yes in practical ways but also in beautiful joyful ways.

There's things a humanitarian budget simply can not cover, you know, little 'extra' things like donuts, bus rides, bubbles and piñatas. Things that help children feel special and experience joy and play.

In the last year our community partnerships have helped in many ways:

  • Peace Club Christmas parties, every child received actual age appropriate gift (over 800 gifts)
  • Bus hire and admission for field trips (most children have never leave their community)
  • Professional psychological child-friendly course (partnership with University of Honduras)
  • Peace Club summer water park day (first ever event with 400 children, water fountains and a lot of ice cream)
  • Christmas food basket with lots of extra flour
  • Extra food deliveries such as this one

The team may be small but 'wow' do they know how to grow the impact of your gift.

The more local partnerships, the more 'unexpected' calls which means more people just like you helping children survive, recover and build a future.

Honduras

Honduras has a long history of political upheaval and organised crime. San Pedro Sula, the second largest city of Honduras, has the most murders per capita of any cities in the world. It is highly dangerous making it a perfect location for one of our three feature pilot programs. In our San Pedro Sula project we are creating safe spaces for children and teenagers. Our programs provide opportunities for learning, both educational and vocational training. We also ensure children participate in classes that ensure they know their worth and rights.

  • Gang violence, drug wars, and child labor are commonplace in many neighbourhoods

  • Honduras is the poorest country in Latin America

  • Millions of Hondurans have fled the country in the past few years; in fact, the so-called Central American 'migrant caravan' is widely considered to begin in San Pedro Sula. Many of those fleeing are women and children who fear rape, kidnapping and murder, and therefore they rather embark on a long and perilous journey.
